Javier Rabanal Appointed Manager of Peruvian Club Cusco FC
Spanish coach Javier Rabanal has been appointed as the new manager of Peruvian club Cusco FC, tasked with improving the team's performance in the upcoming Torneo Clausura.
Javier Rabanal has begun a new chapter in his international coaching career, taking over as manager of the Peruvian club Cusco FC. The Tenerife-born coach replaces Uruguayan Alejandro Orfila, marking his continued presence in South American football just weeks after finishing a twelve-match stint with Universitario de Deportes.
Cusco FC’s board appointed Rabanal to address the team’s recent inconsistency. After a disappointing finish in the Torneo Apertura and an early exit from the Copa Libertadores group stage—where they faced Flamengo, Estudiantes de La Plata, and Independiente Medellín—the club is looking to restructure. Rabanal’s immediate goal is to improve on the team’s sixth-place finish during the upcoming Torneo Clausura and secure a spot in next year’s continental competitions.
Rabanal brings a wealth of experience from diverse footballing environments. His background includes coaching roles in Canada, China, and the Netherlands, where he worked on methodology at Willem II and served on Ruud van Nistelrooy’s staff at PSV Eindhoven. His European experience paved the way for his success in South America, most notably winning the 2025 Ecuadorian league title with Independiente del Valle and reaching the Copa Sudamericana semifinals.
The new manager faces unique challenges at Cusco FC. Founded in 2009 as Real Garcilaso, the club has established itself in Peru’s top flight after a brief administrative relegation in 2021. The team, which rebranded in 2020 to strengthen its local identity, relies heavily on the home-field advantage provided by its stadium, located 3,400 meters above sea level.
Rabanal has already begun training with the squad at the Oropesa sports complex. He is set to make his debut this coming Monday in a League Cup match against Deportivo Garcilaso. The club’s management officially announced the appointment, emphasizing that Rabanal’s international background is the right fit to help the team regain its competitive edge.
