Storm Emilia made Izaña, in Teide National Park, Spain's wettest place last week, recording 105 liters of rain per square meter.

Last week, Storm Emilia made Izaña the wettest place in Spain. According to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the weather station in Teide National Park recorded a total of 105 liters of rain per square meter. Only the town of Almazora in Castellón came close to this amount.

Overall, the Canary Islands received the most rain between December 10th and 16th. Specifically, over 100 liters per square meter fell in the higher areas of Tenerife, La Palma, and Gran Canaria. Aemet also noted that one of the main observatories in the Canary Islands recorded 97 liters per square meter.

Furthermore, Aemet reported that on December 17th, the most significant rainfall was in Gran Canaria and Tenerife, with amounts exceeding 10 liters per square meter. Some inland areas of Gran Canaria received over 30 liters.

Meanwhile, the total rainfall in Spain from the start of the hydrological year (October 1st) until December 16th was 184 liters per square meter. This is 4% less than the normal amount for that period, which is 192 liters per square meter.

Regionally, rainfall has been below average along the Cantabrian coast and across most of the eastern half of the Spanish mainland, with the exceptions of the Valencian Community and eastern Andalusia. On the other hand, rainfall has been higher than the 1991-2020 average in almost the entire western third of the peninsula and in the aforementioned Levante areas.

Regarding the islands, the recent events mean that the entire Canary archipelago and Ibiza have received more rain than usual. However, Mallorca, the eastern half of Menorca, and the western parts of La Palma and Tenerife have seen less rainfall than average.
