The Island Governing Council has allocated nearly €6 million for the construction of 29 new homes in El Rosario and the renovation of 161 homes in Puerto de la Cruz and 20 in Los Silos, as part of a broader initiative to build 257 social housing units across Tenerife.

The Island Governing Council has approved nearly six million euros for building and improving homes on the island.

Of this total, €5,350,000 will go towards building 29 new houses in El Rosario. Over €600,000 has been set aside for upgrading 161 homes in Puerto de la Cruz and another 20 in Los Silos.

The 29 homes in El Rosario are in addition to others already planned in Güímar (30 homes), San Miguel de Abona (90 homes), Los Realejos (27 homes), and Santiago del Teide (17 homes).

Lope Afonso, the vice-president, explained that these new homes are part of a larger agreement between the Island Governing Council and the Government of the Canary Islands. This agreement aims to build 257 homes across Tenerife. The Island Governing Council is directly managing the construction of 193 of these homes, with a budget of almost €45 million.

Housing Minister Sonia Hernández announced that more homes will be built and renovated in El Sauzal and Granadilla de Abona. The Canary Islands Housing Institute (Icavi) will be responsible for the designs.

The approval for the 29 homes in El Rosario marks the completion of a contract for building social housing. Afonso described it as the most significant project of its kind, in terms of both cost and scope, in the history of the island institution.

Minister Hernández added that the island government is committed to working with the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Housing Institute, and with local councils to address the housing shortage in Tenerife.

The Island Governing Council also approved agreements with the city councils of Puerto de la Cruz and Los Silos for urban regeneration projects. These projects will involve renovating housing developments with an investment of over €600,000 across the island.

In Puerto de la Cruz, improvements will be made to 64 homes in El Tejar and 97 homes in La Vera. In Los Silos, around twenty homes in the Príncipe Felipe area will be renovated. These initiatives will help improve the living conditions in these properties.
