The tenth edition of the Isla Calavera Canary Islands Fantastic Film Festival returns to San Cristóbal de La Laguna on November 6, honoring actor Álex García with the S.S. Venture Award and showcasing a diverse selection of regional cinematic talent.
The Isla Calavera Canary Islands Fantastic Film Festival returns to San Cristóbal de La Laguna for its tenth edition, cementing its status as a hub for the regional film industry. The festival kicks off on November 6 at the Teatro Leal.
Organizers have announced that La Laguna-born actor Álex García will receive the S.S. Venture Award. Named after the iconic ship from the original King Kong, the award honors García’s successful career and his role as an ambassador for talent from the Canary Islands on both the national and international stage. He joins a prestigious list of past honorees, including Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Sara Sálamo. García’s career spans from his Goya-nominated performance in The Bride (La novia) to acclaimed roles in major productions like Riot Police (Antidisturbios) and The Immortal (El inmortal).
The festival also continues its support for local creators through the "Made in the Canary Islands" section. Out of 65 submissions, 19 titles—six feature films and 13 short films—have been selected for screening at Multicines Tenerife from November 6 to 15. These works highlight the archipelago’s diverse audiovisual sector, covering genres from horror and science fiction to narratives focused on local social issues and housing.
The program features several notable premieres, including the musical comedy Cuántica Rave and the debut of the Noir Hollow label with La casa de los monstruos and Los que vienen, both filmed locally. The official competition includes titles such as Exilio, Tránsito, and Gummy, while the short film selection showcases a mix of emerging and established talent with works like The Second Kind, Arrorró, and Edén.
Organized by the Charlas de Cine Cultural Association, Multicines Tenerife, and Tumbaabierta.com, the festival is supported by the La Laguna City Council, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the Cabildo of Tenerife. The event serves as a vital platform for the regional film industry as it continues to gain international recognition.
