Isla Calavera Film Festival Gains Global Standing as Canary Islands Hub for Genre Cinema

Spanish cinema is reaching a new level of maturity on the global stage, with specialized film festivals evolving from local gatherings into key players in the international industry. During the recent Cannes Marché du Film, the Isla Calavera Canary Islands Fantastic Film Festival used the platform to promote its upcoming tenth edition, highlighting San Cristóbal de La Laguna not just as a cultural hub, but as a prime filming destination.

The festival, scheduled for November 6–15, has built a strong reputation for attracting high-profile talent. This year’s guests include Christopher Lambert, Tom Berenger, and Joanna Cassidy, further cementing the event’s status as a premier destination for fantasy cinema. Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez noted that this growth is part of a broader strategy to leverage the unique geography of the islands and the historic charm of La Laguna—a UNESCO World Heritage site—to boost the Canary Islands' global profile.

In a move to further professionalize the event, the festival has joined the Méliès International Festivals Federation, connecting it to a wider European network of genre festivals. The festival’s new official poster, which honors the 40th anniversary of David Cronenberg’s The Fly, reflects the balance between classic cinema and modern curation championed by organizers Daniel Fumero, Ramón González Trujillo, and Vanesa Bocanegra.

The success of the Isla Calavera festival—organized by the Charlas de Cine Cultural Association, Multicines Tenerife, and TumbaAbierta.com—is a result of strong institutional support from the La Laguna City Council, the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Tenerife, and Canary Islands Film. By combining this backing with programming that resonates with both local and international fans, the festival has proven that a well-managed, distinct event can turn a regional location into a major landmark on the professional film circuit.
