Ion de Sosa's 'Balearic' Screens at TEA Tenerife
TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes screens Ion de Sosa's Goya-nominated thriller "Balearic," a 16mm film exploring generational and class conflict, this weekend.
TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, located in Tenerife's capital, is screening the film "Balearic" (2025) this week. This thriller, directed by Ion de Sosa, has already gained attention both in Spain and internationally. It explores the conflict between different generations and social classes, set around an incident at a luxury villa in Mallorca.
The plot centers on a group of young people who break into the property and find themselves trapped in the swimming pool by three Doberman dogs. Filmed on 16-millimeter, the movie has a distinct retro look. This style helps highlight its themes of social barriers and how certain class systems continue. De Sosa uses the film to prompt reflection on class divisions and power dynamics.
Ion de Sosa, a filmmaker and cinematographer born in San Sebastián in 1981, has been recognized at major festivals. "Balearic" had its global premiere at the Locarno Festival and its Spanish debut at the Sitges Festival. It also received a Goya Award nomination for Best New Director. De Sosa's career includes his first fiction feature, "Sueñan los androides" (Androids Dream), which premiered at the Berlinale in 2015, solidifying his place in auteur cinema.
The cast includes Lara Gallo, Elias Hwidar, Ada Tormo, Paula Gala, María Llopis, Luka Peros, and Christina Rosenvinge. Screenings at the cultural venue in Tenerife are scheduled from this Friday until Sunday, with a single showing each day at 7:00 PM.
