INSULARIA: Island Film Festival to screen Scottish short films and a selection of BAFTA Shorts
The INSULARIA Island Film Festival will present Scottish cinema, a selection of BAFTA Shorts, and discuss gender equality in film for the ninth time, bringing together filmmakers from around the world.
INSULARIA, the "Islands of the World Online" festival, will take place for the ninth time! This year, in the "Guest Island" section, thanks to cooperation with the Glasgow Short Film Festival, we will get acquainted with Scottish cinema. The program includes 12 short films that will be shown in Spain for the first time. They will tell about modern Scottish cinema – from personal stories to social and experimental documentaries.
The festival starts on October 2 in Frontera with a screening of Paula Cons's film "The Island of Lies" (2020). The director will personally present her work. The film is based on real events: about the shipwreck of the Santa Isabel off the coast of Salvora Island in Galicia in 1921, and about three women who risked their lives to save passengers.
INSULARIA continues to cooperate with other well-known festivals: the Chiloé International Film Festival (Chile), the Isla Verde Film Festival (Cuba), and the Menorca Doc Fest (Spain). Together they organize the ECOISLAS and ISLA MUJERES sections, exchange programs and jury members.
This year, the director and producer of the Chiloé International Film Festival (FICH), Rory Barrientos and Carlos Rojas Hurtado, as well as Chilean filmmakers and actors, will visit us. They will share their experiences and works.
The festival will include meetings and special sections. On October 10, the third ISLA MUJERES forum will be held at the Asabanos Cultural Center, where issues of gender equality in cinema will be discussed. The festival also strengthens ties between the Canary and Balearic Islands by exchanging short films with Menorca Doc Fest. Screenings will take place in parallel on both archipelagos throughout October. In addition, there will be a PANORAMA section featuring contemporary cinema from around the world: the Philippines, Réunion Island, Chile, Cuba, Martinique, Iceland, Greece, Sardinia, and the Balearic Islands.
Actress Candela Peña, a three-time Goya Award winner and star of the series Hierro, will once again come to the Meridian Island to join the jury. She feels a special connection to this place, as one of the most popular series of recent years was filmed here.
At the closing of the festival, on October 12, a selection of BAFTA Shorts will be shown for the first time in Spain, thanks to cooperation with the British Council. The program includes eight short films nominated for and awarded prestigious British awards. Cristina Word from the British Council Spain will attend the event.
INSULARIA is an international forum for island cinema that brings together creators and viewers. Here you can see stories that celebrate the culture and heritage of the islands of our planet.
The festival is sponsored by Promotur, Turismo de Islas Canarias and the Government of the Canary Islands. It is supported by the Cabildo Insular de El Hierro, as well as the municipalities where it takes place.
