Insularia International Film Festival Marks 10th Anniversary in El Hierro

The Insularia-Islas del Mundo International Film Festival celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, marking a decade as a hub for cultural exchange that turns the Canary Islands into a global meeting point. Organizers announced that the festival kicks off on October 1 at 8:30 p.m. at the El Cine Cultural Space in Frontera, El Hierro.

The opening night features filmmaker Fernando Colomo, who will host a discussion following a screening of his 2015 film, Isla Bonita. The movie, which earned Colomo a Goya Award nomination for Best New Actor, was chosen to highlight the festival’s focus on island identity—a theme central to this year’s program.

The festival runs until October 11, with screenings held across various locations in El Hierro, including Valverde, La Restinga, El Pinar, and Sabinosa. A key highlight this year is the festival’s international reach, featuring Greenland as a guest territory. In partnership with the Nuuk International Film Festival, this section will showcase emerging films that explore the social and environmental challenges facing the Arctic.

The closing ceremony will be held on October 11 at the Asabanos Cultural Center in Valverde, where awards will be presented. The event will conclude with a screening of BAFTA Shorts, organized in collaboration with the British Council Spain. Following its run on El Hierro, the festival will embark on its traditional tour across the rest of the Canary Islands.

The festival is supported by a network of institutions, including the Government of the Canary Islands, Promotur Turismo Canarias, the Island Council of El Hierro, and the municipalities of Frontera, Valverde, and El Pinar. Additional support comes from the DIARIO DE AVISOS Canary Foundation and Radiotelevisión Canaria. By partnering with film festivals in Chile, Menorca, the Caribbean, and Glasgow, Insularia continues to strengthen its role as a vital link for island cinema worldwide.
