Influencers Drive Shift Toward Sustainable Tourism in Tenerife’s Isla Baja
Social media influencers are promoting sustainable, off-the-beaten-path tourism in Tenerife’s northwest, encouraging travelers to explore local culture and eco-friendly transport options in Buenavista del Norte.
Social media influencers are changing how we travel domestically, encouraging people to visit year-round and explore beyond the typical sun-and-beach hotspots. A recent recommendation from content creator @ismafeten highlights the northwest of Tenerife as a perfect destination for travelers who prefer local culture and food over mass tourism.
The suggested route focuses on the municipality of Buenavista del Norte, an area known as "Isla Baja." Here, the focus is on preserving the landscape and traditional culinary roots. The journey includes historic sites like the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, alongside stops at iconic local businesses like El Aderno. Founded in 1991 by Teobaldo Méndez, this bakery is famous for its traditional rosquetes and other local sweets.
The itinerary also emphasizes "zero-kilometer" dining, where restaurants serve ingredients sourced directly from the surrounding area. Bodegón El Patamero in Las Lagunetas is a prime example, featuring regional wines, Teno cheeses, and local meats that define the area’s unique flavors.
The trip ends at Punta de Teno, a stunning, ecologically sensitive area. To protect this fragile environment, private vehicles are restricted. Instead, visitors are encouraged to use public transport; the local bus line 369 runs from the center of Buenavista to the lighthouse. The 20-minute trip costs just one euro, making it an easy and sustainable way to reach the coast while helping to minimize the impact of tourism on the landscape.
