Indefinite Air Traffic Controller Strike Begins in Tenerife
Air traffic controllers at Tenerife’s airports have launched an indefinite strike over working conditions, prompting warnings of potential flight disruptions and delays.
Air traffic in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is facing a major challenge as of midnight. An indefinite strike by air traffic controllers employed by Saerco has begun, threatening to disrupt flights at Tenerife’s airports.
The strike, organized by the USCA and CCOO unions, stems from a long-standing dispute over how the company manages its staff. Union representatives argue that current working conditions are unstable and are calling for better staffing levels, stricter adherence to rest periods, and improved shift scheduling to ensure flight safety.
While airport operator Aena has promised to maintain minimum services to limit the impact on passengers, there is no clear end in sight for the strike. Negotiations between the unions and Saerco have failed, leading both sides to seek help from the Interconfederal Mediation and Arbitration Service (SIMA). Because the two sides remain far apart, travel disruptions could continue for some time, affecting connections to and from the islands.
Consumer groups are advising travelers to be cautious. They recommend checking for airline updates regularly and arriving at the airport early to help manage potential delays or cancellations. This situation highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding the privatization of air traffic control and the impact that labor disputes can have on passengers.
