The popular San Cristóbal de La Laguna bar Pan de Lata will close permanently on October 18 after ten years of operation as its owners head into retirement.

The historic center of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is set to lose another local staple. Pan de Lata, located at 58 San Agustín Street, has announced it will close its doors on October 18, ending a ten-year run. The owners confirmed that the closure is due to their retirement, bringing an end to the business they started in 2016.

For the past decade, Pan de Lata has been more than just a bar; it was a popular meeting spot that paid tribute to traditional local establishments like the historic Bar Acentejo. Known for its simple menu of canned goods, small sandwiches, and classic appetizers, it became a go-to venue for local celebrations, from Carnival to the Christmas season.

The closure highlights a growing trend in Spanish cities, where the retirement of business owners and a lack of younger generations to take over are rapidly changing the character of historic districts. As these long-standing neighborhood hubs disappear, so does a vital part of the community’s identity.

Before closing for good, the management is inviting customers to share photos and memories to help create a collaborative archive of the bar’s history. While the doors will remain open until October 18 for final farewells, there is no word yet on what will replace the business at this prime location in the heart of the World Heritage city.
