The town of Icod de los Vinos is hosting a tribute tonight to award-winning filmmaker David Baute, celebrating his significant contributions to Canarian cinema and environmental documentary storytelling.
Tonight, the town of Icod de los Vinos will host a special tribute to filmmaker David Baute, highlighting the rising influence of Canarian talent in today’s film industry. The event, organized by the Sociedad Centro Icodense and the local council, begins at 8:00 p.m. to celebrate the career of the Garachico-born director.
The tribute is part of the Northwest Tenerife Cinefórum, an initiative backed by the island’s Cabildo since 2016. The series aims to bring culture to more areas outside the main cities and encourage thoughtful discussion about regional filmmaking. Previous honorees include Mirtha Ybarra and the brothers Teodoro and Santiago Ríos.
Baute is well-known for his dedication to documentaries and environmental issues. His recent success with Black Butterflies—which won the 2025 Goya for Best Animated Film—demonstrates how cinema can effectively address global challenges like climate-driven migration.
Beyond his directing work, Baute has been a key figure in shaping the Canary Islands' film industry. Since 2009, he has led the Canary Islands International Environmental Film Festival (FICMEC), helping to establish the region as a hub for sustainability awareness. His work as a producer has also been instrumental in mentoring new talent and bringing local projects to an international audience.
By honoring Baute, the Cinefórum continues its mission to serve as a meeting point for both industry professionals and the public, blending film screenings with meaningful conversations about the creative process.
