Icod de los Vinos Residents Protest Stalled Coastal Regeneration Plan in Tenerife Capital
Residents of Icod de los Vinos are protesting in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to demand the immediate revival of a long-stalled coastal regeneration project for Playa de San Marcos.
The deteriorating state of the coastline in Icod de los Vinos has reached a breaking point, prompting local residents to take their protest to the capital of Tenerife. According to local reports, the "SOS Playa de San Marcos" group has organized a demonstration today outside the regional government headquarters to protest what they describe as years of administrative inaction.
The protesters are demanding the revival of a coastal regeneration plan that has been stalled for over a decade. Although the project—designed by the public company Gestur—received technical approval last year, it remains stuck in limbo due to two missing regional administrative procedures.
This delay has caused significant political tension. The Icod de los Vinos municipal council recently passed an emergency motion urging the Canary Islands' Ministry of Public Works to submit the required documentation immediately. Residents fear that without urgent action, the project will be forgotten, much like previous efforts in 2014 and 2015.
To ensure a strong turnout, the organizers have arranged transport from Icod de los Vinos, with protesters arriving in Santa Cruz de Tenerife by 11:00 a.m. for the demonstration. Group spokesperson Beatriz Acosta Sáez emphasized that the protest is a necessary step to apply pressure and finally move the project from the planning stage to actual construction.
