The Icod de los Vinos City Council has deferred action on a disabled resident's three-year water supply dispute to the courts, citing conflicting technical reports and legal risks.

The management of local public services is back in the spotlight after a resident in Icod de los Vinos revealed she has been without running water in her home for three years. As reported by Diario de Avisos, the woman, who has a 67% disability rating, is currently taking the City Council to court to gain access to this essential service.

The issue was raised at yesterday’s municipal council meeting, where the Coalición Canaria (CC) party urged Mayor Javier Sierra to intervene. The party’s spokesperson, Mercedes Vera, argued that the mayor should look beyond technicalities, noting that social services have already documented the urgent need to resolve the situation for the resident, who lives in the Suliman building.

In response, Mayor Sierra defended the local government’s position, citing legal concerns. He stated that he cannot authorize the water connection because four separate technical reports have advised against it. He warned that ignoring these findings could lead to accusations of misconduct. Ultimately, the council voted to wait for the court’s decision before taking any further action, with the CC being the only party to vote against this delay.

However, an alternative path was suggested by the Popular Party. Spokesperson Coromoto Yanes proposed that the City Council provide social assistance to help the resident with her daily needs while the legal case remains ongoing. This situation highlights the difficult conflict between strict administrative regulations and the urgent needs of vulnerable residents when public utility companies face property-related legal hurdles.
