The Canary Islands International Environmental Film Festival has launched a photography contest in Icod de los Vinos to promote the conservation of the historic Millenary Dragon Tree and its surrounding ecosystem.

Icod de los Vinos is launching a new photography contest focused on its famous Millenary Dragon Tree. Organized by the Canary Islands International Environmental Film Festival (FICMEC), the competition aims to use photography to raise awareness about the environment and the importance of preserving botanical heritage.

Supported by the local tourism department and Icodtesa, the contest goes beyond simple art. Festival director David Baute wants participants to capture not just the unique Dracaena draco tree, but also the complex ecosystem that surrounds it. This initiative reflects a broader trend in Spain, where nature photography is increasingly used to promote sustainable tourism and protect local biodiversity.

Entries are now open and will be accepted until April 30, 2026. Cash prizes will be awarded to photographers who best capture the essence of this historic site through their technical skill and creative vision. Full contest rules and guidelines are available on the official FICMEC website.

This project highlights the Dragon Tree Park as a vital cultural landmark. By inviting both professionals and amateurs to participate, the organizers hope to document the tree’s condition while encouraging the public to appreciate and protect the archipelago’s natural treasures.
