Icod de los Vinos Launches Photography Contest to Promote Drago Park Heritage
Icod de los Vinos has launched a photography contest in partnership with Ficmec to promote the town's botanical heritage and the iconic Millennial Dragon Tree ahead of a traveling exhibition.
Icod de los Vinos is launching a new photography contest to promote its local heritage and boost tourism. Organized by the Canary Islands International Environmental Film Festival (Ficmec), the competition focuses on the Drago Park, aiming to celebrate both artistic talent and the importance of preserving the area’s unique botanical identity.
Entries are open until this Thursday, April 30, and are divided into two categories. The first, focusing on the Drago Park as a whole, offers a 500-euro prize for the winner and 250 euros for the runner-up. The second category, which highlights the famous Millennial Dragon Tree, offers a 250-euro prize and the opportunity to have the winning photo featured in the June issue of Binter magazine. Full details and registration are available on the festival’s official website.
The project is also designed to bring culture to the wider community. Gerardo Rizo, head of Tourism and Icodtesa, explained that the partnership with Ficmec allows the festival to reach beyond cinema and engage local neighborhoods. A traveling exhibition will launch at the park from June 4 to 7 before touring various parts of the municipality and local fairs, making the town's natural heritage accessible to everyone.
While the main Ficmec program takes place in Garachico from May 28 to 31, the festival will conclude in Icod de los Vinos. The winners will be announced at the photography exhibition, with results also shared across the organizers' digital platforms. This collaboration highlights how photography can be a powerful tool for celebrating and protecting Tenerife’s unique ecosystems.
