A hybrid Hyundai was destroyed by a fire in Arafo, Tenerife, on Thursday, prompting renewed discussions regarding the specialized firefighting techniques required for lithium-ion battery incidents.

Safety concerns surrounding electric and hybrid vehicles have returned to the spotlight following a fire in Arafo, Tenerife, this Thursday. A hybrid Hyundai was completely destroyed by flames while parked on a plot of land next to a sports center in the El Carretón area.

The fire broke out around 10:15 a.m. near the road connecting the TF-1 motorway to the TF-28. Fortunately, there were no injuries. Firefighters from the Valle de Güímar station arrived quickly to bring the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading further. While the Hyundai was a total loss, a second car parked nearby sustained only minor damage. Both vehicles belonged to people using the nearby sports facilities.

Incidents like this have reignited the debate over how emergency services should handle hybrid and electric vehicle fires. While statistics show these cars are not necessarily more prone to fires than traditional gas-powered vehicles, their lithium-ion batteries require specialized firefighting techniques. Emergency crews must carefully manage battery temperatures and watch for the risk of reignition, which presents a unique logistical challenge as these vehicles become more common on Spanish roads. The Arafo Local Police managed traffic in the area while an investigation into the cause of the fire began.
