HUC Remains Canary Islands' Sole Public Fertility Treatment Center

The Human Reproduction Unit at the University Hospital Complex of the Canary Islands (HUC) has confirmed its status as the region’s only public center for comprehensive fertility treatment. According to 2025 data, the unit performed over 1,000 procedures last year, bringing its total to nearly 19,000 in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles since it opened in 1991.

Last year’s activity included 641 IVF/ICSI procedures, 110 artificial inseminations, and 521 embryo thawing cycles. As the only public facility in the Canary Islands offering this full range of services, the HUC also provides advanced care, including preimplantation genetic testing, egg donation, and specialized support for serodiscordant couples.

The hospital also plays a vital role in fertility preservation, particularly for oncology patients. Before starting treatments that could affect their future fertility, patients work with a multidisciplinary team—including gynecologists, biologists, urologists, and nurses—to preserve eggs, embryos, ovarian tissue, or sperm. This process is coordinated with the hospital’s genetics and ultrasound departments to ensure every patient receives personalized care.

The unit uses advanced techniques like intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), which uses a micropipette for direct fertilization, achieving pregnancy rates that match standard IVF. To ensure high standards, the center participates in the National Registry of Activity and Results, which audits the performance of assisted reproduction clinics across Spain.

Beyond patient care, the unit partners with the University of La Laguna to train the next generation of medical and biology professionals. Through regular external audits, the HUC ensures its services consistently meet both clinical and national quality standards.
