Renowned British techno producer Mark Broom traces his influential career back to a transformative 1989 summer in Tenerife, where the island's burgeoning electronic music scene first ignited his passion for the genre.

Mark Broom is a leading name in British techno today, but his career began in an unexpected place: Tenerife. A summer trip to the island in 1989 proved to be the turning point that sparked his passion for music. This wasn't just a holiday anecdote; it highlights how the Canary Islands served as a surprising hub for cutting-edge electronic music in the late eighties.

Broom was 18 at the time, and the island’s nightlife introduced him to the sounds of acid house and Chicago house, which were just beginning to spread across Europe. Inspired by those early synthetic beats and basslines, he bought his first mixing equipment as soon as he returned to the UK. This experience paved the way for his entry into the London electronic scene, where he began working with influential figures like Baby Ford and the team behind Black Dog Productions, while also spending time at the iconic FatCat Records.

Tenerife’s role in this musical movement wasn't unique to Broom. Historians have noted that between 1986 and 1996, the south of the island became a meeting point for European electronic music. British tourists brought the latest trends from their home clubs, allowing smaller local venues to become experimental laboratories for new sounds long before the era of massive festivals.

Since his recording debut in 1992, Broom’s career has gone from strength to strength. He has released over 150 singles and worked with prestigious labels like Warp, M-Plant, Cocoon, and Blueprint Records. His global reach recently saw him performing at Berlin’s legendary Berghain club in December 2024. In 2009, he also launched his own label, Beard Man, to further his work as a producer and publisher.

More than 30 years later, the influence of that summer in the Canary Islands still shapes his work, as heard on his Touch EP, released in May 2026. Broom’s journey is a reminder of how chance encounters can shape an artist’s path, and it cements Tenerife’s place in the history of electronic music.
