Holy Week celebrations in Tenerife’s Adeje and Arona municipalities are drawing significant crowds this year through a blend of elaborate community-led theatrical performances and traditional liturgical processions.

Holy Week in the south of Tenerife has become a major cultural highlight this year, with celebrations in Adeje and Arona drawing significant attention.

In Adeje, the performance of the Passion on Calle Grande has grown beyond a religious event into a true community effort, involving nearly 300 local volunteers coordinated by the municipal Department of Culture. This year’s production features a refreshed approach, with new choreography and staging designed to enhance the visual storytelling. Notable updates include a more dramatic version of the Last Supper and the addition of dance performances by students from the local Municipal School of Music during the scenes featuring Pilate and Claudia. The Garden of Olives scene has also been reimagined, using a symbolic contrast between good and evil to add depth to the performance.

Meanwhile, Arona is hosting a wide-ranging program of liturgical events across the municipality. On Good Friday, the historic center held traditional observances, including the Stations of the Cross and the Procession of Solitude. These activities reached across the region, with services held in Valle San Lorenzo, Buzanada, Las Galletas, and Los Cristianos to ensure all local parishes were included.

The celebrations will conclude with Easter weekend. Holy Saturday is set aside for the Easter Vigil, as parishes prepare their churches for the holiday. On Easter Sunday, the cycle will close with Masses and processions held throughout the municipality, including the procession of the Blessed Sacrament in the town center. According to the Arona town council, schedules have been tailored to suit each neighborhood. This widespread participation highlights how these long-standing traditions continue to bring the community together and revitalize local culture.
