The Canary Islands will build a modern shipbuilding center to develop the "blue economy."
The Canary Islands plan to create a "Canary Industrial Shipbuilding Center" with an area of over 9,500 square meters for the repair, construction of ships, and training of specialists.
The Canarian company Hodgson Strategies has developed an economic plan for the creation of the "Canarian Industrial Shipbuilding Center" (CIDNC). This project was initiated by the local organization FEMETE, which unites metallurgy and new technology companies on the island of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The CIDNC is planned to be located in the fishing port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The center will occupy an area of over 9,500 square meters.
This center will repair and build ships. It will also train specialists in various areas of shipbuilding. This will help provide the Canary Islands with qualified workers and avoid attracting people from abroad.
The CIDNC will have spacious premises, classrooms, and workshops with modern equipment. Thanks to this, the center will become one of the best in Europe for training specialists in the field of shipbuilding.
The creation of such a center will help meet the needs of the shipbuilding industry, which is actively developing in the Canary Islands. It will also positively affect other related industries, improve the sector's competitiveness, and increase its contribution to the islands' economy.
The maritime industry plays an important role in the economy of the Canary Islands. It is part of the "blue economy" development strategy. The main areas include ship repair and construction. There are 3 shipyards and 89 workshops in the Canary Islands that are engaged in the maintenance, repair, and conversion of ships.
The "blue economy" is an important driver of the Canary Islands' economy, bringing in about 4.1 billion euros, or 9% of gross domestic product. It also provides over 70,000 jobs.
The development of the maritime industry is important for the functioning of many other sectors, such as fisheries, maritime transport, ports, aquaculture, cruises, maritime tourism, water desalination, and marine energy.
This project was made possible thanks to the cooperation of FEMETE with the organization Atiren Connavalte, which unites ship repair and construction companies, as well as with Talleres Quintana, which specializes in the repair and maintenance of the shipbuilding industry.
The "Canarian Industrial Shipbuilding Center" will receive support from the Government of the Canary Islands, the Tenerife Local Council, and the Municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
