Historic Gran Hotel Taoro Reopens in Tenerife Following Major Restoration
The historic Gran Hotel Taoro has reopened in Puerto de la Cruz, blending 19th-century heritage with modern luxury to revitalize tourism and social life in northern Tenerife.
The reopening of the Gran Hotel Taoro in Puerto de la Cruz marks a major step forward in revitalizing tourism in northern Tenerife. Originally opened in 1890 as Spain’s first luxury hotel, the property is now being restored to serve as a vibrant social and economic hub for both visitors and local residents.
The renovation carefully balances the building's 19th-century heritage with modern hospitality needs. The project highlights the hotel’s historic French-style gardens and adds new amenities, such as heated pools, to make the most of its stunning views over the Orotava Valley.
A key part of the hotel’s new identity is its diverse dining scene, designed to appeal to locals as much as guests. The culinary program features three main restaurants: OKA, which offers a fusion of Japanese and local flavors led by Ricardo Sanz; LAVA, where chef Erlantz Gorostiza focuses on high-end cuisine inspired by the island’s volcanic landscape; and Amalur, which celebrates natural ingredients. The hotel also includes more casual spots like La Carola, the Atlántico breakfast area, and the Tagoror lobby bar, which is open to the public.
Beyond dining, the hotel has partnered with Anne Semonin to open the Sandára Wellness center. By offering memberships for personal training, yoga, and hydrotherapy, the center encourages local residents to visit regularly. This approach reflects the hotel’s goal of reclaiming its historical status as the heart of social life in Puerto de la Cruz, while adapting to modern trends in leisure and wellness.
