Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s historic China restaurant on Avenida de Anaga has officially reopened following a six-week closure caused by disruptive local street redevelopment projects.

The China restaurant on Avenida de Anaga has officially reopened, ending a period of uncertainty for one of Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s most historic eateries. According to the digital community La Laguna y las 8 Islas Canarias en fotos, the restaurant is back in business after a six-week closure caused by ongoing street redevelopment, as previously reported by Diario de Avisos.

Since opening in 1967, the restaurant has been a pioneer of Asian cuisine on the island. However, owner Javier Lu Sin was forced to close the doors last June, citing a critical financial situation caused by the construction work. He explained that the dust, noise, and blocked access for customers threatened the livelihoods of the ten families who depend on the business.

The situation highlighted the friction that can occur between city modernization and the survival of traditional local shops. The restaurant’s owners claimed they filed four formal complaints with the City Council without receiving a helpful response. In contrast, Councilor for Works Javier Rivero maintained that the construction never actually blocked access to the property.

After six decades of continuous service, the restaurant’s recent six-week hiatus serves as a reminder of how vulnerable local businesses are to large-scale urban projects. While the return of this landmark venue is good news for the city’s hospitality scene, the incident has sparked a wider debate about how local governments should support and communicate with businesses affected by public works.
