Historic Casa del Corregidor Restored in San Cristóbal de La Laguna
Comercio La Laguna has successfully restored the historic 16th-century Casa del Corregidor, preserving a vital piece of Tenerife's administrative heritage within the UNESCO World Heritage city.
Comercio La Laguna has announced the successful restoration of the Casa del Corregidor in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, marking a significant achievement in preserving the island’s historical urban landscape. This project does more than just improve the building's appearance; it brings a property that served as the heart of Tenerife’s administrative and judicial power since the mid-16th century back into the life of the city.
Built between 1540 and 1545, the house was the official seat of the corregidores—officials appointed by the monarch to hold supreme political and military authority on the island. The building is a rare example of architecture from that era, featuring local stone and late Plateresque details. Historians have been able to date the structure precisely thanks to the coat of arms of Jerónimo Álvarez de Sotomayor, who served as corregidor while the building was under construction.
This restoration is particularly important given that La Laguna was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. By preserving this property, the city is not only protecting a physical landmark but also strengthening the historical identity of the "City of the Adelantados." Making this site accessible to the public is a vital step in honoring the collective memory and maintaining the integrity of the buildings that shaped the island’s administration during the early years of Castilian rule.
