Emergency services in Tenerife successfully rescued a 68-year-old hiker who sustained an ankle injury in the Vilaflor area, prompting authorities to reiterate the need for caution and proper preparation on the island's challenging trails.

A rise in hikers visiting Tenerife’s high-altitude trails has once again highlighted the challenges of performing rescues in difficult terrain. On Friday, emergency services were called to the Los Pinos area in Vilaflor to assist a 68-year-old woman who suffered a moderate ankle injury while hiking.

The rescue required a coordinated effort from multiple agencies. Firefighters stabilized the woman and carried her from the trail to a location accessible by road. From there, the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) transported her to Hospiten Sur for further medical care.

Local police, the Civil Guard, and the Rural Guard also assisted by securing the area and managing the necessary paperwork.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety protocols in Tenerife’s protected natural areas. Authorities emphasize that the island’s steep, volcanic terrain requires hikers to be physically prepared and equipped with the right gear. With incidents like this occurring frequently, emergency services remain on high alert and urge hikers to exercise extreme caution when exploring the island’s more challenging trails.
