Hiker Airlifted After Sustaining Leg Injury in Tenerife’s Teide National Park
A 66-year-old hiker was airlifted to a hospital with a leg injury after falling in the rugged terrain of Tenerife’s Teide National Park on Sunday.
A 66-year-old hiker had to be rescued from the volcanic terrain of Las Cañadas del Teide on Sunday, June 14, 2026, after suffering a fall. The incident in the La Orotava area of Tenerife once again highlighted the logistical challenges rescue teams face within the National Park.
Emergency services were alerted to the accident at 3:19 p.m. Spanish Red Cross teams reached the hiker first to assess his condition, finding that he had sustained a moderate leg injury. Due to the difficult terrain, it was determined that a ground evacuation would be unsafe.
As a result, a helicopter from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) was deployed to airlift the man to safety. He was subsequently taken to the Hospital del Norte for medical treatment.
This incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in high-altitude hiking. The rugged landscape of Teide requires careful preparation, and the coordination of specialized rescue teams remains vital for ensuring the safety of those navigating the park’s challenging trails.
