Hiker Airlifted After Accident on Unstable Terrain in Tenerife
A 26-year-old hiker was airlifted to safety by emergency services after suffering moderate injuries in a fall on unstable terrain in Tegueste, Tenerife.
A 26-year-old hiker had to be rescued on Sunday after an accident in the Mesa de Tejina area of Tegueste, Tenerife. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of hiking after heavy rainfall.
Recent storms have left the ground unstable, making the already challenging terrain even more hazardous. Because the area was too difficult to access by land, the Tenerife Fire Consortium and Civil Protection requested an aerial rescue. A helicopter from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) successfully airlifted the man to Tenerife North Airport.
Once on the ground, the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) treated the hiker for moderate injuries before taking him to the University Hospital of the Canary Islands for further care.
Authorities are urging the public to be extremely cautious when hiking after bad weather. Rain can quickly turn safe trails into dangerous paths due to the island’s volcanic landscape and saturated soil. Hikers are advised to always check weather conditions and trail status before heading out, as unstable terrain can also make it difficult for emergency teams to reach those in need.
