High UV Radiation Alert Issued for Pope’s Upcoming Tenerife Visit
Health officials have issued a high-risk ultraviolet radiation alert for Tenerife during Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming visit, urging attendees to take extreme sun-protection precautions during outdoor events.
Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming visit to Tenerife faces a significant challenge: health officials have issued a high-risk ultraviolet (UV) radiation alert for the duration of his stay. The General Directorate of Public Health warns that dangerous radiation levels will affect much of the island, including the capital, where the main papal event is scheduled to take place at the Dársena de Los Llanos.
Because the event is set for midday—the time of peak solar intensity—authorities are urging attendees to take extreme precautions. The alert covers a wide range of municipalities, including Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Puerto de la Cruz, Los Realejos, La Orotava, Garachico, San Juan de la Rambla, Santa Úrsula, La Victoria de Acentejo, El Sauzal, Tacoronte, Tegueste, Candelaria, Arafo, Güímar, Fasnia, and Arico.
The event poses a logistical challenge, as attendees will likely face long waits outdoors due to security and mobility restrictions. Public Health officials warn that even if the weather feels cool or cloudy, UV radiation remains high and dangerous.
Prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to serious long-term health issues, including skin cancer, as well as immediate problems like severe sunburn and eye damage. To stay safe, authorities strongly recommend using SPF 50+ sunscreen, wearing UV-rated sunglasses, using hats, and covering as much skin as possible with clothing.
This warning is not meant to discourage people from attending, but rather to ensure everyone stays safe. Officials are particularly concerned for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, those with chronic health conditions, and people with fair skin. Attendees are encouraged to stay in the shade whenever possible and to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
