South African tennis player Lloyd Harris has won the Tenerife Challenger tournament, marking a significant moment in his career. This victory not only signals his return to top-level tennis after being sidelined by injury, but it also reinforces Tenerife's standing as a key location on the international tennis circuit.
Harris, who was the sixth seed, defeated Spain's Alejandro Moro Cañas in the final at the Abama Tennis Academy. He won in straight sets, both 7-5. This is his second consecutive Challenger title this season and his eighth overall on this circuit, moving him up to 155th in the ATP rankings. Moro Cañas, by reaching the final, is now ranked 244th in the world. Harris, a former world number 31, expressed his satisfaction with this achievement, especially after recovering from major back surgery. He stated that his main goal is to finish the season in good health.
Organized by MEF Tennis Events, the Tenerife tournament is becoming an important event on the tennis calendar. Previous editions have hosted notable players such as Matteo Arnaldi, Pablo Carreño Busta, and Brandon Nakashima. The final day in Tenerife also featured a special exhibition match at the Tenerife Arena. Former world number 9 Fabio Fognini played against promising young Canarian talents: Saúl Pacheco Benasayag, Joel Toral Ocaña, and Samuel García Hernández, drawing a large audience.
The final press conference was attended by several officials. These included Lope Afonso, Vice President and Councillor for Tourism of the Cabildo de Tenerife, and Dimple Melwani, CEO of Turismo de Tenerife. Both highlighted how the event promotes the island through sport and encourages local youth to participate. They also noted the synergy with other island celebrations, such as Carnival. Also present were Ana Isabel Dorta Alonso, the mayor of Guía de Isora; Oliver Jesús Afonso Rodríguez, the Councillor for Sports; and representatives from tennis federations and the organizing body.
