Gustavo Pérez, former mayor of Güímar and advisor to the President of the Canary Islands Government, has been appointed director of the Canarian Institute of Public Administration (ICAP), necessitating his resignation as a Güímar councilor.

Gustavo Pérez, who previously served as mayor of Güímar and an advisor to the President of the Canary Islands Government, has been appointed the new director of the Canarian Institute of Public Administration (ICAP). This move marks a new phase in his career and also brings changes to Güímar's local political scene, as reported by DIARIO DE AVISOS.

Pérez's new role at ICAP, a key organization for training and modernizing the regional public service, required him to resign as a councilor on the Güímar City Council. He officially stepped down at the last council meeting. This resignation is standard practice in Spanish politics, as it's not permissible to hold both a councilor position and a directorship of a public entity of this level.

Pérez's political history includes his time as Güímar's mayor, a position he left in August 2025 after a no-confidence vote. This vote was initiated by the Popular Party, with support from two dissenting socialist councilors and one from Nueva Canarias. Following this, Pérez advised the President of the Canary Islands Government before taking on his current leadership role at ICAP. It's worth noting that ICAP recently underwent a reorganization, which included its previous director, Pino de León Hernández, moving to the Canarian Housing Institute (Icavi).

Pérez's new appointment has also led to several shifts within the Coalición Canaria (CC) party in Güímar. While he must give up his councilor seat, the former mayor will continue as the general secretary of the local nationalist group. At the municipal level, Haridian Martín will now serve as the group's spokesperson during council meetings. Additionally, the municipal group is saying goodbye to Javier Eloy Campos, who has also announced his departure as a nationalist councilor. To complete the new lineup, Yannett Valido and Cristian Santana are joining as new councilors.

Pérez publicly commented on these changes, emphasizing Haridian Martín's deep understanding of local politics and confirming she has the organization's full support. He told DIARIO DE AVISOS that despite his reduced involvement in daily council activities, the internal structure of the political party remains unchanged.
