Granadilla Social Services Delays Spark PSOE Criticism

Vulnerable residents in Granadilla de Abona are facing waits of over two months for social services, prompting the local Socialist party to criticize the current three-party government for increased delays.

Vulnerable people in Granadilla de Abona are facing long waits for social services, sometimes more than two months. The local Socialist party (PSOE) has raised concerns, blaming the current three-party government (made up of Coalición Canaria, Partido Popular, and Vox) for these increased delays.

Jennifer Miranda, spokesperson for the Socialists, said the current administration is changing a system that used to put people first. She stressed that these delays mean many families have to wait months for the help they desperately need.

The Socialist party contrasted this with their 20 months in charge of the local government. During that time, they claim they significantly reduced waiting times, often providing appointments in less than seven days. They also introduced an emergency social worker to deal with urgent cases right away. Adán García, who was the Councilor for Community Welfare then, said their approach proved that quick and proper help is possible when there's the political will, especially for those most in need.

The PSOE also reminded everyone that in their first month in office, they brought back in-person social services. This reversed a policy from 2020 by the previous government, which had prioritized phone appointments due to the COVID-19 pandemic and had been unpopular with users.

However, since the current coalition took over the local government, waiting times have increased once more. The Socialist Group in Granadilla de Abona City Council has warned that social services must not be managed poorly or negligently. They are calling on the current local government to improve how this vital service, essential for many residents, is run.
