Granadilla Launches Organic Waste Recycling Campaign
Granadilla de Abona has launched the "Recycle Organic and Give Back Life" campaign to educate residents and businesses on proper organic waste separation and sustainable management.
The Granadilla de Abona City Council, working with its public company Sermugran and the Canarian Foundation for Recycling and Sustainable Development (Fundación Canarias Recicla), has started a new campaign called "Recycle Organic and Give Back Life." The goal is to help people in homes, businesses, and schools across the municipality properly separate and use their organic waste.
The campaign was launched in San Antonio de Padua square. Attendees included Marcos Antonio Rodríguez Santana, the Granadilla de Abona City Councillor for Public Services, Works, Environment, and Beaches, along with Antonio Aitor González González, Sermugran's manager, and educators from Fundación Canarias Recicla. They highlighted the importance of improving sustainable waste management by focusing on organic waste. This step is crucial for the municipality to become more circular and environmentally friendly.
The "Recycle Organic and Give Back Life" campaign will include information sessions, workshops, and educational activities for schools, community groups, and the general public. Using leaflets and mobile information stands, the campaign will show people how to correctly sort organic waste into the brown bins and explain what items can be placed inside.
Councillor Marcos Antonio Rodríguez pointed out that "organic waste makes up almost 40% of household rubbish. Separating it properly will significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. It also allows us to create high-quality compost, which can then be returned to the soil, completing the natural cycle of resources."
Fundación Canarias Recicla stressed that environmental education is vital for the project's success. "Citizen involvement is key," they said. "We want every resident to see that recycling organic waste isn't just a duty, but a chance to protect our environment and turn waste into something valuable."
Over the next few months, the campaign will be implemented across the entire municipality, with a particular focus on areas where brown bins are not being used effectively. Sermugran will also improve collection services and provide tailored support to homes, businesses, and other places that want to start separating their waste at the source.
Through this initiative, Granadilla de Abona is reinforcing its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and European circular economy policies, aiming for a more efficient, sustainable, and planet-friendly approach.
Granadilla aims to be more sustainable, and with your help, it can be!
