Granadilla de Abona officials are urging state authorities to increase police staffing to address public safety concerns caused by the municipality's rapid population growth.

Granadilla de Abona’s rapid population growth has outpaced its current security resources, according to a recent report from the local council. Following a Local Security Board meeting, Mayor José Domingo Regalado urged state authorities to increase the number of police officers to better match the municipality’s size, noting that it is one of the fastest-growing areas in Tenerife.

This gap between urban expansion and public services has created a significant challenge for local safety. During the meeting—which included the Government Sub-delegate for Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Jesús Javier Plata, and representatives from the Civil Guard, Canary Islands Police, and Local Police—officials discussed the need for a reinforcement plan. Security Councilor María Candelaria Rodríguez and Emergency Councilor José Sanabria both warned that the current workload is unsustainable for the existing staff.

The meeting also addressed illegal passenger transport near Tenerife South Airport. Local and regional police are working together to crack down on these practices and ensure regulations are followed at this key transit hub. While the Civil Guard is assisting with these efforts, local leaders emphasized that better coordination cannot replace the urgent need for more personnel.

Granadilla de Abona’s request is about more than just local management; it is a call for stability across southern Tenerife. The council maintains that securing funding and approval from higher authorities to expand the police force is essential to maintaining public safety as the region continues to grow.
