Granadilla de Abona to Build Modular Parking Facility in El Médano to Ease Congestion

Granadilla de Abona is changing how it manages traffic in its busy tourist areas by embracing modular architecture. The local government in Tenerife announced that construction on a new parking facility in El Médano will begin this September, aiming to ease the severe vehicle congestion that hits the area during peak seasons.

The project, which costs over 2.6 million euros, will be built on a 2,155-square-meter site near the local soccer field on Calle Isla Tenerife. The two-story structure will feature a walkable roof and is expected to be finished within five months. Once complete, it will add 180 parking spaces, addressing a long-standing request from local residents and business owners.

Beyond simply adding parking, the project is notable for its construction method. Mayor José Domingo Regalado emphasized that the prefabricated system follows circular economy principles, meaning the structure can be dismantled, moved, or expanded as the town’s needs change. Marcos Antonio Rodríguez, the Councilor for Works and Services, plans to monitor the project’s success to see if this flexible model can be used in other busy areas, such as the Granadilla town center or San Isidro.

This initiative is part of a wider plan to reorganize traffic and public space. The City Council is currently drafting new rules for mobility and parking zones to improve traffic flow and prioritize residents. By choosing modular construction, the council hopes to provide a faster, more sustainable alternative to traditional building methods, helping the municipality keep pace with the challenges of rapid population growth and high visitor numbers.
