Granadilla de Abona Suspends Social Worker Exam Amid Allegations of Irregularities
The Granadilla de Abona city council faces calls for an internal investigation after a social worker recruitment exam was suspended due to serious irregularities, including breaches of candidate anonymity and security protocols.
The integrity of local government hiring in Granadilla de Abona is under scrutiny following reports of serious irregularities during a recent recruitment process. PSOE spokesperson Jennifer Miranda has criticized the city council’s handling of an exam for five social worker positions, arguing that it failed to uphold the essential principles of equality, merit, and fairness required for public employment in Spain.
The controversy centers on a breach of anonymity, which is a standard requirement to ensure impartial grading. According to the Socialist group, candidates were told to write their personal details and identification numbers directly on their exam papers, a practice that violates standard security protocols. Furthermore, the exam was poorly managed; some candidates were able to see the questions before they were officially distributed, creating an unfair advantage.
The situation worsened when organizers, unable to provide candidates with copies of the exam for future appeals, suggested that participants use their mobile phones to photograph the questions. This decision created a significant security risk, as it potentially allowed candidates to consult external sources. The resulting frustration led a large group of the more than 100 candidates to walk out, forcing the exam to be suspended ahead of expected formal complaints.
Transparency in public examinations is a constitutional guarantee designed to prevent favoritism and ensure objectivity. The PSOE spokesperson described the events of April 15 as unprecedented in the municipality’s history, noting the significant distress caused to candidates who had spent years preparing for these roles.
In response, the Granadilla PSOE has called for an internal investigation into the Human Resources department. The party is demanding public explanations and urgent corrective action, warning that they will seek the dismissal of the responsible councilor if those in charge do not take accountability. Their goal is to restore public trust in the fairness and integrity of the city council’s hiring processes.
