Study halls in Granadilla de Abona remain closed due to a legal dispute over a municipal service contract and recurring administrative failures in the bidding process.

Students in Granadilla de Abona have been left without access to study halls in El Médano and Los Cardones due to ongoing administrative issues. According to El Día, the closure is the result of a legal dispute over the contract for a new youth engagement manager, highlighting recurring problems with how the City Council manages outsourced services.

The trouble began when a company that lost the bidding process challenged the decision. Under public sector contract laws, this automatically freezes the process until a formal resolution is reached. The situation has been made worse by poor planning: two previous bidding attempts failed due to miscalculations regarding labor costs, and there was a significant delay between the end of the old contract in May and the start of the new bidding process in August.

Raquel Morales, the Councilor for Education, described the closure as a temporary measure and acknowledged the frustration it has caused students. She explained that because the City Council is waiting for an external ruling, they cannot yet provide a reopening date. However, she promised that once the administrative deadlock is resolved, the council plans to improve the service and extend operating hours.

Meanwhile, the opposition is stepping up its criticism. PSOE spokesperson Celia Trujillo blamed the government for a series of errors in the tender process. She also accused the council of a lack of transparency, noting that signs posted at the El Médano facility claimed the closure was for maintenance work, which she argues misrepresents the true administrative cause of the shutdown.
