Granadilla de Abona Proposes New Judicial Hub to Boost Tenerife South Services

Granadilla de Abona has proposed a 2,300-square-meter site for a new judicial complex, aiming to establish an independent district and improve legal services for over 110,000 residents in southern Tenerife.

Granadilla de Abona City Council has offered a plot of land in the Los Hinojeros area, marking a major shift in how judicial services are managed in the south of Tenerife. This proposal aims to end speculation about merging local courts with those in Arona, focusing instead on establishing an independent judicial district to better serve the region’s growing population.

The site covers over 2,300 square meters and is zoned for a complex of up to 7,000 square meters, with a height limit of 15 meters. Its central location makes it ideal for a new headquarters that would serve San Miguel de Abona, Vilaflor de Chasna, Arico, and Fasnia. The need for this facility is clear: the current judicial district serves more than 110,000 people—70,000 of whom live in Granadilla—and existing resources are no longer sufficient.

Following a site visit by President Fernando Clavijo and Deputy Minister of Justice and Security Cesáreo Rodríguez, the regional government is considering the offer as a way to modernize local judicial infrastructure. The project’s future now depends on upcoming technical reports from the Canary Islands government, which will outline the next steps.

This move is part of a broader effort to decentralize public services across the islands to keep up with population growth. By building a new courthouse in Granadilla, officials hope to improve legal efficiency and ensure that residents in the south have reliable, local access to justice without needing to rely on other districts.
