Granadilla de Abona Opens New €1 Million Funeral Home in Town Center

The Granadilla de Abona City Council has officially opened the new Nuestra Señora del Rosario funeral home on Calle El Pino. The project, which cost over one million euros, fulfills a long-standing request from residents in the town center for local mortuary services.

Previously, families living in the town center had to travel to nearby areas like El Médano or Charco del Pino to hold wakes. The new facility, located near the San Antonio de Padua church, aims to make these services more accessible.

The building spans three levels across a 1,153-square-meter plot. The ground floor is dedicated to logistics and management, while the upper level features two mourning rooms, each equipped with private areas, kitchens, and outdoor spaces. The site also includes a rear parking area with accessible spaces for people with reduced mobility.

Opening the facility required significant urban planning changes. After purchasing the land in 2018, the City Council had to amend the 2005 General Urban Development Plan. Previous regulations restricted funeral services to the area around the municipal cemetery, which was both too small and outdated. Updating these rules was essential to allow construction in the town center.

This project highlights a common challenge for municipalities in the Canary Islands: updating infrastructure to keep pace with population growth that has far outstripped original urban plans. By modernizing land-use policies, the council has ensured that residents have access to essential services that meet current standards.
