Granadilla de Abona Nears Completion of Charco del Pino Sports Facility Upgrades
The Granadilla de Abona City Council is nearing completion of an 838,000-euro renovation of the Charco del Pino soccer field, marking a key step in its broader plan to modernize municipal sports infrastructure.
After years of bureaucratic delays, the modernization of sports facilities in southern Tenerife is finally nearing completion. The Granadilla de Abona City Council expects to finish the first phase of renovations at the Charco del Pino soccer field by August, allowing the local club to return in time for the new season.
This project is part of a broader municipal plan to improve sports infrastructure. With an investment of 838,000 euros—the bulk of a 1.15 million euro budget—the work addresses long-standing complaints from athletes. Users have reported that the field’s surface, which had been in use for over 20 years, was worn out and contributing to frequent injuries.
The current upgrades include installing new synthetic turf, improving the drainage system, and preparing the site for future renovations to the stands. While Public Works Councilor Marcos Antonio Santana acknowledged that the project has faced delays, the council is already planning the next phase: upgrading the lighting system. This is expected to modernize the technology while cutting electricity consumption by 30%.
The plan also involves removing the perimeter athletics track to create more space, a move long requested by the local sports club. The council intends to relocate the track to a new, certified facility near the IES Granadilla.
These improvements come as the council works to resolve long-standing issues regarding land ownership. The field is currently owned by the Inter-island Soccer Federation of Tenerife, but the City Council has begun the formal process of acquiring the site. This step is essential to end years of jurisdictional disputes and ensure the facility is managed effectively by the municipality.
