Granadilla de Abona Launches Municipal Heritage Catalog to Preserve Local History
Granadilla de Abona is launching a new Municipal Heritage Catalog to preserve local landmarks and streamline urban planning, inviting residents to contribute their historical knowledge through a series of public meetings.
Granadilla de Abona is taking a major step toward preserving its local history by creating a new Municipal Heritage Catalog. The local council says this project will officially document the area’s artistic and architectural landmarks while providing property owners with clearer legal guidelines for future building and renovation projects.
Led by Fredi Oramas, the Department of Historical Heritage wants the catalog to reflect more than just official records; they want to include the community's own knowledge and memories. To achieve this, the council is hosting a series of public meetings where residents can share their stories and suggestions. These sessions will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on the following dates:
- Monday, April 27: San Luis Obispo Franciscan Convent (historic center)
- Tuesday, April 28: SIEC in San Isidro
- Wednesday, April 29: Chimiche House of Culture
In addition to public feedback, a team of experts will conduct fieldwork throughout May. They will inspect properties of interest—including building interiors—to ensure that important local sites are not overlooked simply because they aren't currently in official records.
Mayor José Domingo Regalado emphasized that this project is vital for both protecting local identity and improving urban planning. By establishing clear rules on which elements must be preserved, the council hopes to make the process of obtaining building permits simpler and more transparent for everyone. Ultimately, the success of this initiative relies on the community’s involvement, turning local knowledge into a lasting tool for the town's future.
