Granadilla de Abona Launches Local Bus Service to Connect Communities
Granadilla de Abona is launching a new local bus service with five routes using three accessible minibuses, aiming to connect less populated areas with key services and the intercity network, funded entirely by the town council.
Granadilla de Abona is introducing its own local bus service, featuring five routes run by three 22-seater minibuses. This new service will connect with the existing intercity bus network operated by Titsa. The routes have been designed to link less populated areas with more densely populated zones, public services, health centres, and major bus stops.
The plan, which began in 2022 with the town council's proposal to buy into Titsa, is expected to cost over half a million euros, with the entire amount funded by the Granadilla Town Council.
The five new local bus lines, numbered 401 to 405, are projected to serve around 90,000 passengers annually. Officials described this as a significant development for public transport in Granadilla de Abona.
The mayor stated that public transport should serve all parts of the municipality, and this project is a major step towards achieving that. He added that this long-awaited initiative will improve how people travel and connect neighbourhoods and towns. The mayor also confirmed that next year Granadilla de Abona will have a modern, accessible public transport system tailored to residents' needs.
The aim is to create a well-organised, efficient, accessible, and sustainable transport system to make daily commutes easier for everyone. The Councillor for Mobility explained that preparations are already underway, with a trial period planned for the second quarter of next year. This trial will help fine-tune the service based on actual user schedules and requirements.
The three minibuses will be accessible for people with reduced mobility and will include features like air conditioning, Wi-Fi, information screens, and security cameras. The buses will run two services in the morning and two in the afternoon, with schedules adjusted based on passenger numbers and local demand.
