Granadilla de Abona Launches Beach-Based Physical Therapy Program to Boost Resident Health
The Granadilla de Abona City Council has launched a therapeutic exercise program at El Médano beach, utilizing the marine environment and professional physiotherapy to support residents managing chronic conditions and recovery.
Combining physical therapy with natural environments has become a vital public health tool, as shown by a new exercise program at El Médano beach launched by the Granadilla de Abona City Council. Running until October 30, this initiative reflects a shift in local policy: moving away from traditional care models to focus on prevention, therapeutic support, and helping residents maintain their independence.
Coordinated by the Department of Health Promotion, the program currently supports about thirty participants. It is specifically designed for people living with fibromyalgia, breast cancer survivors, and caregivers. To ensure consistent care, the program blends beach-based sessions—held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.—with indoor activities at the M3 Civic Space on Mondays.
Professional physiotherapists supervise every session, which is crucial for safety. Research shows that prescribed exercise helps reduce fatigue from medical treatments, manages chronic pain, and prevents the loss of physical function. By moving these sessions to the coast, the council aims to use the marine environment to boost both physical recovery and emotional well-being.
Cande Chinea, head of the department, noted that the program’s success depends on tailoring exercises to each individual and providing accessible spaces that encourage social connection. Beyond building strength and endurance, the popularity of this annual program highlights a growing demand for health services that prioritize the individual, promoting healthy habits within a safe, professionally supported environment.
