The Granadilla de Abona City Council has allocated eight new farming plots at the Las Crucitas estate to promote local food production and community-led agriculture in southern Tenerife.

Efforts to boost local food production in southern Tenerife have taken a step forward. The Granadilla de Abona City Council has officially allocated eight new farming plots at the Las Crucitas estate, a move designed to bring agriculture into the community and help residents become more self-sufficient.

Managed by the Department of the Primary Sector, this initiative follows a growing trend across Spain of revitalizing rural land through community-led projects. By providing plots already equipped with the necessary infrastructure, the council hopes to support the agricultural sector and combat the decline in farming that has affected many rural areas in recent years.

José Sanabria, head of the department, noted the strong public interest in the project. The council’s strategy is about more than just land use; it serves as a way to build social connections and provide environmental education, allowing people with no farming experience to learn how to grow their own food. By expanding the Las Crucitas site, the municipality is creating a sustainable model that pairs hands-on experience with expert guidance, making it easier for a new generation to get involved in agriculture.
