
Granadilla de Abona Celebrates Traditional Festivities and Cultural Events
The Tenerife municipality of Granadilla de Abona is hosting a diverse series of cultural and religious festivities, including the ongoing celebrations in San Isidro and the traditional Day of the Cross.
The Tenerife municipality of Granadilla de Abona is currently hosting a busy schedule of celebrations. According to the local council, these events aim to blend religious tradition with social and cultural activities to help bring the community together. The program features a wide variety of events, ranging from food festivals to religious ceremonies.
The main focus is currently in San Isidro, where festivities honoring San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza are underway. Running until May 15, the program kicked off with a showcase of local wine and food, accompanied by live music. This Saturday, the town will host the 14th "Baile de Taifa," featuring a dozen folk groups and orchestras, followed by the 44th "Romería" (pilgrimage) and a street dance on Sunday. The schedule also includes dedicated days for different community members, with activities for children on May 12 and for the elderly on May 13.
Religious observances will peak on the eve and the day of the patron saint. On May 14, there will be a Eucharist and a procession, ending with a fireworks display. This schedule will be repeated on May 15 following a solemn mass.
Meanwhile, the historic center of Granadilla de Abona is celebrating the Day of the Cross. This tradition involves over twenty local groups, including schools and neighborhood associations, who create crosses in squares, churches, and cultural centers throughout the area. Carlos Abimael Díaz, the head of the Department of Culture, praised the residents for their hard work in keeping these local customs alive. Additionally, the El Calvario district held its own celebrations this past weekend, rounding out the municipality's festive calendar.
