Granadilla de Abona Begins Construction on First Modular Parking Facility in El Médano

To tackle the severe parking shortage in Tenerife’s coastal areas, the Granadilla de Abona City Council is testing a new industrial-style solution. Construction has begun in El Médano on the island’s first modular parking facility, designed to ease vehicle congestion in one of the south’s busiest tourist and residential hubs.

The project, backed by a 2.9-million-euro public investment, is being built on a 2,155-square-meter plot near local sports facilities. The two-story structure will feature a pedestrian-friendly rooftop and provide over 160 parking spaces. The council expects the work to take five months and has introduced a mobility plan to minimize disruption for locals.

For the next eight business days, heavy vehicle traffic is restricted to two windows—9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.—to prevent gridlock. Additionally, Public Works Councilor Marcos Antonio Rodríguez is considering making Calle Tenerife a one-way street to create extra parallel parking spaces while construction is underway.

This prefabricated, demountable parking model is part of a broader strategy. The council has already approved a second facility for Avenida Magallanes and is looking into expanding the project to San Isidro and the Granadilla town center. Simultaneously, officials are exploring the purchase of private land at the entrances to El Médano and the Trincheras area, as the municipality works to balance rapid population growth with limited urban space.
