Granadilla Council Joins Complaint Over Resident's Repeated Sewage Spills
Granadilla de Abona City Council has joined criminal proceedings as an injured party against a resident accused of repeatedly causing sewage spills from a housing complex's sanitation well onto public streets, citing public health and interest concerns.
The Granadilla de Abona City Council has joined a complaint against a resident of the Santa Rita housing complex. This resident is accused of repeatedly causing sewage to spill onto public streets from the building's sanitation well in the town center.
The city government noted that the property belongs to the Canary Islands Housing Institute (Icavi). They also stated that ever since the sewage spills began, the City Council has been consistently and urgently cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing the affected area.
Mayor José Domingo Regalado's administration clarified that while the council isn't responsible for maintaining this particular sanitation well, they have acted quickly and consistently. Their goal was to protect public health, stop bad smells, prevent infections, and reduce problems for residents and people passing by. They've had to repeat these actions many times to prevent further spills.
In a statement released yesterday, the Granadilla de Abona City Council confirmed that the spills come from the sanitation well in the housing complex. They also highlighted that a resident of the community has repeatedly caused the pipe breakdowns, leading the problem to reoccur after every time the council has intervened.
The local government also pointed out that since the building is rented out, the responsibility for maintaining and repairing the well legally falls to the residents' community – the tenants – not the City Council.
Because of how serious and frequent these incidents are, and their impact on public safety and health, the Granadilla City Council announced that the community has filed a complaint against the person accused of causing the breakdowns.
In response, the city administration has decided to join the criminal proceedings as an "injured party" to protect public interest and health. The City Council has also informed the Public Prosecutor's Office, providing all necessary information to determine who is criminally responsible and to ensure a permanent solution to the problem.
Finally, the local authorities stated that the Granadilla de Abona City Council is firmly and actively committed to protecting public health, promoting good neighborly relations, and maintaining the urban environment. They will continue to work to ensure such situations are resolved and do not happen again, according to yesterday's statement from the governing body.
