'Godzilla' Actress Kaylee Hottle Dies in Maryland Car Crash at 19

The American film industry is mourning the death of Kaylee Hottle, the young actress known for her breakout roles in the Godzilla franchise. According to local reports, Hottle died following a car accident in Frederick County, Maryland, early Tuesday morning, July 21.

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the crash. At approximately 2:52 a.m., the 1995 Honda Accord Hottle was riding in veered off the road and struck a structure. Although she was rushed to a trauma center, she could not be saved. The 19-year-old driver sustained minor injuries, and a second passenger declined medical treatment. Authorities are currently investigating speeding as a potential factor in the accident.

Hottle’s father, Joshua, confirmed the news in a public statement shared in American Sign Language (ASL), the family’s primary language. The Texas School for the Deaf, where Hottle was a student, also released a statement expressing their condolences and noting the deep impact of her loss on their community.

Beyond her acting credits, Hottle was a trailblazer for the deaf community in mainstream film. Her 2021 debut as Jia in Godzilla vs. Kong was historic, as it featured a deaf actress in a lead role where ASL was central to the story. Her performance required co-stars like Rebecca Hall and Alexander Skarsgård to learn sign language, helping to bridge communication both on and off the set.

Hottle’s career also included appearances in the series Magnum P.I. and various advertising campaigns. She returned to the big screen in 2024 for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, a performance that earned her a Saturn Award nomination and solidified her status as a rising star.
