Galician theater company Momento Impro is set to showcase their technical mastery of improvisation through performances of Absurdia and Xente at the 5th Canarias Improvisa Festival.

Theatrical improvisation is far from a game of chance; it is a demanding technical discipline that requires training as rigorous as any elite sport. As the Galician company Momento Impro has demonstrated, mastering this craft allows performers to maintain high standards, even when working without a script.

Since 2011, the trio of Dani Blanco, Arturo Cobas, and Antón Coucheiro has been instrumental in professionalizing improvisation in Galicia. Their journey—which began with self-taught roots in clowning and circus arts—mirrors the evolution of the genre itself, moving from informal alternative spaces to major cultural institutions and international festivals.

As part of the 5th Canarias Improvisa Festival, the group will present two shows that explore improvisation from different perspectives. On November 12 at 6:00 p.m., they will perform Absurdia at the Teatro Leal. This piece dives into the theater of the absurd, prioritizing character logic over traditional storytelling—a significant technical challenge to pull off without a script.

The group will also perform Xente, a street theater show designed to interact directly with the public. It will take place on Saturday, November 14, at 12:00 p.m. in Vilaflor de Chasna, and on Sunday, November 15, at 5:00 p.m. in San Diego (La Laguna). Unlike the controlled environment of a theater, the street requires performers to capture the attention of passersby and turn the bustle of daily life into the heart of the performance.

The work of these artists, who also organize festivals like Imperdible and ImproMaxín, highlights the importance of bringing the performing arts to all corners of the community. By taking improvisation into public spaces, the collective aims to make culture more accessible, inviting everyone to experience a creative process where spontaneity meets technical skill.
