Güímar Reopens Beaches After Water Quality Returns to Safe Levels
Authorities have reopened El Cabezo and Los Perros beaches in Güímar after water quality tests confirmed that bacterial levels have returned to safe limits following a technical fault.
Normal service has resumed along the Güímar coastline following a brief health scare that led to temporary swimming restrictions. Local authorities have officially reopened El Cabezo and Los Perros beaches on the Paseo de las Palmeras after water quality tests confirmed that microbiological levels are back within safe regulatory limits.
The five-day closure began on September 11, when a technical fault at the local submarine outfall caused a spike in bacteria. Levels reached 410 intestinal enterococci units per 100 milliliters—double the legal limit for safe bathing. These bacteria are used as a key indicator of sewage contamination, and exceeding safety thresholds poses a potential risk to public health.
Following repairs to the sanitation infrastructure, the Tenerife Health Area Directorate has declared the water safe for swimming once again. As a precaution, the City Council monitored the entire Puertito de Güímar coastline during the cleanup. These tests confirmed that the surrounding beaches were unaffected by the incident, allowing all restrictions to be lifted and normal beach activities to resume.
