Funeral Plans Announced for Bishop Emeritus Bernardo Álvarez
The Diocese of Nivariense has announced funeral plans for Bishop Emeritus Bernardo Álvarez Afonso, including a wake on November 26 and a funeral mass and burial at La Laguna Cathedral on November 27.
The Diocese of Nivariense has announced the funeral plans for Bishop Emeritus Bernardo Álvarez Afonso, who died this Tuesday. His wake will be held on Wednesday, November 26, starting at 7:00 PM, at the church of the Hospital de Dolores in La Laguna. People can go there to pay their last respects to the bishop.
The funeral mass will be held the next day, Thursday, November 27, at 3:00 PM, at the Cathedral of La Laguna, the main church of the diocese. A procession will go from the church of Los Dolores to the Cathedral. Bishop Bernardo will be buried there, after meeting the health regulations for burials inside churches.
The bishop's body will be buried in the Chapel of the Canarian Saints. This chapel is on the left as you enter the Cathedral. It's called this because it holds images of Saint Brother Pedro and Saint José de Anchieta, alongside the Virgin of Candelaria.
The diocese has also planned two memorial Masses for the bishop. The first will be at the Cathedral on December 4 at 7:00 PM. The second will be held later in his hometown of Breña Alta, La Palma, to honour him in his birthplace.
